The introduction at the 2020 Emmy Awards for Tyler Perry’s Achievement Award got me. It got me in the gut, in my heart and seemed to finally affirm that TV is more than just a talking picture box to me.
Growing up as an only child, I had a TV in my room since I could remember. I was watching MTV which was mostly music videos still in the 1990s at a potentially too young of age. I remember watching very early seasons of the Real World and its counter adventure show Road Rules. I was a middle school anthropologist/sociologist fascinated by these strangers put into these social experiments to see what happens when people stop being polite, and start getting REAL. Having grown up in a liberal no-major-bounds household, I was free to do what I wanted and watch what I want (within reason) or at least without my parents knowing. These shows opened my mind to other types of people I would later encounter in my own life.
The Chairman and CEO of the Television Academy, Frank Scherma introduces Tyler Perry for his award with strong words about the power of television. I am all for it! I LOVE TV and I am proud to admit it. It has more power and intimacy than you ever realized right now.
